| Biography: | After graduating from art school, Declan
McGonagle became Director of the
Orchard Gallery in Derry in 1978. He
went on to be Director of Exhibitions at
the ICA, London, and then Visual Arts
Organiser for Derry City Council.
He was nominated for the Turner Prize in
1987 for making the Orchard Gallery an
international centre for the artist. He was
appointed as the first Director of the Irish
Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, in 1990
and stayed for 11 years, with a string of
other key roles including Irish
Commissioner for the Venice Biennale in
1993 and the Sao Paulo Biennale in
1994.
He recently directed Dublin's City Arts
Centre Civil Arts Inquiry, which proposed
a non-building-based model for the
centre focused on research,
programming, publishing and
communication.
In 2004 he was appointed as Director
and Professor of Art and Design at the
